24 Then (A)Mephibosheth the [a]grandson of Saul came down to meet the king; but (B)he had neither [b]tended to his feet, nor [c]trimmed his mustache, nor (C)washed his clothes since the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace. 25 And it was when he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, “(D)Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?” 26 So he said, “My lord the king, my servant betrayed me; for your servant said, ‘I will [d]saddle the donkey for myself so that I may ride on it and go with the king,’ (E)since your servant cannot walk. 27 Furthermore, (F)he has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is (G)like the angel of God, therefore do what is good in your sight. 28 For (H)all my father’s household was only people worthy of death to my lord the king; (I)yet you placed your servant among those who ate at your own table. So what right do I still have, that I should [e]complain anymore to the king?” 29 So the king said to him, “Why do you still speak of your affairs? I have [f]decided, ‘You and Ziba shall divide the land.’” 30 And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Let him even take it all, since my lord the king has come safely to his own house.”

31 Now (J)Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim; and he went on to the Jordan with the king to [g]escort him over the Jordan. 32 Barzillai was very old: eighty years old; and he had (K)provided the king food while he stayed in Mahanaim, for he was a very great man. 33 So the king said to Barzillai, “You cross over with me, and I will provide you food in Jerusalem with me.” 34 But Barzillai said to the king, “(L)How long [h]do I still have to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? 35 I am [i]now (M)eighty years old. Can I distinguish between good and bad? Or can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Or can I still hear (N)the voice of men and women singing? (O)Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king? 36 Your servant would merely cross over the Jordan with the king. So why should the king compensate me with this reward? 37 Please let your servant return, so that I may die in my own city near the grave of my father and my mother. However, here is your servant (P)Chimham; let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.” 38 And the king answered, “Chimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him what is good in your sight; and whatever you [j]require of me, I will do for you.” 39 All the people crossed over the Jordan and the king crossed too. The king then (Q)kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his place.

40 Now the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah and also (R)half the people of Israel [k]accompanied the king. 41 And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “(S)Why have our brothers, (T)the men of Judah, abducted you and brought the king and his household and all David’s men with him, over the Jordan?” 42 Then all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because (U)the king is a close relative to [l]us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all [m]at the king’s expense, or has anything been taken for us?” 43 But the men of Israel answered the men of Judah and said, “[n](V)We have ten parts in the king, therefore [o]we also have more claim on David than you. Why then did you treat [p]us with contempt? Was it not [q]our [r]advice first to bring back [s]our king?” Yet the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel.

Now (A)I praise you because you (B)remember me in everything and (C)hold firmly to the traditions, just as I handed them down to you. But I want you to understand that Christ is the (D)head of every man, and [a](E)the man is the head of a woman, and God is the (F)head of Christ. Every man who has something on his head while praying or (G)prophesying disgraces his head. But every (H)woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for it is one and the same as the woman [b]whose head is (I)shaved. For if a woman does not cover [c]her head, have her also [d]cut her hair off; however, if it is disgraceful for a woman to [e]have her hair cut off or [f]her head shaved, have her cover [g]her head. For a man should not have his head covered, since he is the (J)image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For (K)man [h]does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but (L)woman for the man’s sake. 10 Therefore the woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 However, in the Lord, neither is woman [i]independent of man, nor is man [j]independent of woman. 12 For as the woman originated from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and (M)all things originate (N)from God. 13 (O)Judge [k]for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does even nature itself not teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her as a covering. 16 But if anyone is inclined to be contentious, (P)we have no [l]such practice, nor have (Q)the churches of God.

17 Now in giving this next instruction (R)I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better, but for the worse. 18 For, in the first place, when you come together [m]as a church, I hear that [n](S)divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. 19 For there also (T)have to be factions among you, (U)so that those who are approved may become [o]evident among you. 20 Therefore when you come together it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper, 21 for when you eat, each one takes his own supper first; and one goes hungry while (V)another gets drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the (W)church of God and (X)shame those who have nothing? What am I to say to you? Shall (Y)I praise you? In this I do not praise you.

The Lord’s Supper

23 For (Z)I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that (AA)the Lord Jesus, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He also took (AB)the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the (AC)new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death (AD)until He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy way, shall be (AE)guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a person must (AF)examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For the one who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not properly recognize the [p]body. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number [q](AG)are asleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are (AH)disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with (AI)the world.

33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is (AJ)hungry, have him eat (AK)at home, so that you do not come together for judgment. As to the remaining matters, I will (AL)give instructions (AM)when I come.

David’s Last Song

23 Now these are the last words of David.

David the son of Jesse declares,
(A)The man who was raised on high,
(B)The anointed of the God of Jacob
And the sweet psalmist of Israel, declares,
(C)The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me,
And His word was on my tongue.
The God of Israel said it;
(D)The Rock of Israel spoke to me:
(E)He who rules over mankind righteously,
(F)Who rules in the fear of God,
(G)Is like the light of the morning when the sun rises,
A morning without clouds,
When the fresh grass springs out of the earth
From sunshine after rain.’
Is my house not indeed so with God?
For (H)He has made an everlasting covenant with me,
Properly ordered in all things, and secured;
For will He not indeed make
All my salvation and all my delight grow?
(I)But the worthless, every one of them, are like scattered thorns,
Because they cannot be taken in hand;
Instead, the man who touches them
Must be [a]armed with iron and the shaft of a spear,
And (J)they will be completely burned with fire in their [b]place.”

David’s Mighty Men

(K)These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth, a Tahchemonite, chief of the [c]captains; he was called Adino the Eznite because of eight hundred who were killed by him at one time. And after him was Eleazar the son of (L)Dodo the (M)Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there to battle and the men of Israel had [d]withdrawn. 10 (N)He rose up and struck the Philistines until his hand was weary and [e]it clung to the sword, and (O)the Lord brought about a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to plunder the dead.

11 Now after him was Shammah the son of Agee, a (P)Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered [f]into an army where there was a plot of land full of lentils, and the people fled from the Philistines. 12 But he took his stand in the midst of the plot, defended it, and struck the Philistines; and (Q)the Lord brought about a great victory.

13 Then three of the thirty chief men went down and came to David at harvest time to the (R)cave of Adullam, while the army of the Philistines was camping in (S)the Valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then (T)in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 15 And (U)David had a craving and said, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem which is by the gate!” 16 (V)So the three mighty men forced their way into the camp of the Philistines, and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and carried it and brought it to David. Yet he would not drink it, but (W)poured it out as an offering to the Lord; 17 and he said, “Far be it from me, Lord, that I would do this! (X)Should I drink the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” So he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.

Healing on the Sabbath

10 Now Jesus was (A)teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And [a]there was a woman who for eighteen years had had (B)a [b]sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent over double, and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” 13 And He (C)laid His hands on her; and immediately she stood up straight again, and began (D)glorifying God. 14 But (E)the synagogue leader, indignant because Jesus (F)had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, “(G)There are six days during which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 But (H)the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, (I)does each of you on the Sabbath not untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? 16 And this woman, (J)a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom (K)Satan has bound for [c]eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this restraint on the Sabbath day?” 17 And as He said this, all His opponents were being [d]humiliated; and (L)the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.

Parables of Mustard Seed and Leaven

18 So (M)He was saying, (N)What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and (O)the birds of the sky nested in its branches.”

20 And again He said, (P)To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 (Q)It is like [e]leaven, which a woman took and hid in (R)three [f]sata of flour until it was all leavened.”

Teaching in the Villages

22 And He was passing through one city and village after another, teaching, and (S)proceeding on His way to Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them, 24 (T)Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 Once the head of the house gets up and (U)shuts the door, and you begin standing outside and knocking on the door, saying, ‘(V)Lord, open up to us!’ and He then will answer and say to you, ‘(W)I do not know where you are from.’ 26 Then you will (X)begin saying, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets!’ 27 And yet He will [g]say, ‘(Y)I do not know where you are from; (Z)leave Me, all you [h]evildoers.’ 28 (AA)In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out. 29 And they (AB)will come from east and west, and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, (AC)some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

31 At that very time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, “Go away and leave this place, because (AD)Herod wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that [i]fox, ‘Behold, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I [j](AE)reach My goal.’ 33 Nevertheless (AF)I must go on My journey today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a (AG)prophet would perish outside Jerusalem. 34 (AH)Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, (AI)just as a hen gathers her [k]young under her wings, and you were unwilling! 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until you say, ‘(AJ)Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
